Forbearance/Forgiveness

Forbearances allow you to suspend or reduce your payments for a period of time. You may qualify for forbearance because of financial hardship or other reasons.

Loan forgiveness means that you are not required to repay all or part of a loan. Qualifications for forgiveness are determined by federal regulations.

Forbearance/Forgiveness forms:

General Forbearance - For borrowers unable to make regularly scheduled payments because of financial difficulties due to personal problems, general forbearance allows for postponement or reduced monthly payments.

Internship/Residency Forbearance - For borrowers who have exhausted eligibility for internship/residency deferment, or whose promissory note does not provide for an internship/residency deferment. Must provide a statement from an authorized official of the organization with which the borrower is undertaking the internship or residency program. This statement must certify that the internship or residency program is a supervised training program that requires the completion of at least a bachelor's degree before acceptance into the program and that the borrower has been accepted into the program. The statement must also include the anticipated dates on which the borrower will begin and complete the program.

National Service/Americorps Forbearance - For borrowers serving in an approved national service position. Must be certified by the Corporation for National Community Services (CNCS). Borrower must provide documentation showing the beginning and ending dates for the period the borrower is serving in a national service position.

Loan Debt Burden Forbearance - Allows postponement of payments or a reduced payment amount for a limited and specific period of time, if documentation is provided showing that the monthly payments for eligible education loan(s) exceeds 20 percent of total monthly gross income. The borrower must submit evidence of the amount of the most recent total monthly gross income received from employment and other sources. The borrower must also submit evidence of the monthly payments owed by the borrower to any other entities for the most recent month for the borrower's Stafford, PLUS, and Perkins loans.

Department of Defense Repayment - Allows postponement of payments for up to a year at a time for periods that would qualify the borrower for partial loan repayment under the Student Loan Repayment Programs administered by the U.S. Department of Defense under 10 U.S.C. 2171. The borrower must submit documentation of the beginning and ending dates for which the U.S. Department of Defense considers the borrower to be eligible for such payment.

Child Care Provider Loan Forgiveness Forbearance - Allows postponement of payments for up to a year at a time for periods that would qualify the borrower for partial loan forgiveness under the Child Care Provider Loan Forgiveness Program.

Child Care Provider Loan Forgiveness Renewal of Benefits - The Child Care Provider Loan Forgiveness Program is a demonstration program that is intended to bring more highly trained individuals into the early child care profession and to keep those child care providers for longer periods of time. Under this program, individuals who work full-time in certain child care facilities that serve low-income families and meet other qualifications may be eligible to have up to 100 percent of their loans forgiven. Unfortunately, no additional funding was provided for this program, so no new applications are being accepted. Borrowers must have already been accepted into this forgiveness program.

Teacher Loan Forbearance - Allows postponement of payments during which the borrower is maintaining eligibility for loan forgiveness under the Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program. This request must be made annually and at the time of the forbearance, the lender must believe that the cancellation amount will satisfy the anticipated outstanding loan balance at the time of the expected cancellation.

Teacher Loan Forgiveness - Borrowers whose loans were all obtained on or after October 1, 1998 and teach in an eligible elementary or secondary school may have part of their Stafford or PLUS loan forgiven after five years of teaching. Borrowers may receive up to $5,000 in loan forgiveness. Highly qualified teachers of secondary school mathematics or science in an eligible school may receive forgiveness of up to $17,500. Highly qualified special education teachers in an eligible school may receive forgiveness of up to $17,500.
